Young sensation Tanvi Sharma advanced to the semi-finals of the Syed Modi International Super 300 badminton tournament on Friday. The day saw mixed results for top seeds with India’s Unnati Hooda securing a victory while Singapore’s Jai Heng Jason Teh faced elimination in the quarterfinals.Sixteen-year-old Tanvi Sharma, following her victory over former world champion Nozomi Okuhara, defeated Hong Kong’s Lo Sin Yan Happy 21-13, 21-19 in 38 minutes. She will face 5th seed Hina Akechi of Japan, who defeated third seed Sung Shuo Yun 21-8, 21-15.In another competitive match, Unnati Hooda overcame fellow Indian rising star Rakshitha Sree Santosh R with scores of 21-15, 13-21, 21-16. Her next challenge will be against Turkey’s fourth seed Neslihan Arin, who won against India’s Isharani Baruah 21-19, 13-21, 21-15.Men’s top seed Teh lost to Japan’s Minoru Koga in a close match lasting over an hour with scores of 19-21, 21-12, 20-22. Koga will now compete against Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan in the semifinals.The other men’s semi-final will feature Indian players Kidambi Srikanth and Mithun Manjunath. Srikanth progressed after Priyanshu Rajawat’s retirement at 21-14, 11-4, while Mithun defeated Manraj Singh 21-18, 21-13.In women’s doubles, top-seeded pair Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly secured their semi-final spot by defeating Turkish duo Bengisu Ercetin and Nazlican Inci 21-15, 21-16.Treesa continued her successful run in mixed doubles alongside Hariharan Amsakarunan. The pair defeated Australia’s Andika Ramadiansyah and Nozomi Shimizu 21-18, 21-14 to reach the semi-finals.
