Mrunal Thakur apologizes for Bipasha Basu remark: 'My intent was never to body-shame'

Mrunal Thakur has addressed the resurfaced video in which she was seen body-shaming Bipasha Basu, calling it a mistake and admitting that she has learned from the experience. The Lust Stories 2 actress said she now understands the weight of her words and believes growth comes from accepting one’s errors.

“If I hadn’t walked that route, I wouldn’t have understood”

During an interview with Filmygyan, Mrunal reflected on her earlier remark about beauty standards and the backlash that followed.

“There’s something that I have said about beauty standards. I didn’t realise until I walked that route. If I hadn’t had, mai shayad samajhti hi nahi. Mujhe lagta mai sahi hi hu,” she said.She added, “But nahi yaar. I take a lot of courage, and I graciously accept that it was a journey, and everyone learns it.”Her comments come after an old clip from an interview with her Kumkum Bhagya co-star Arijit Taneja resurfaced online. In the video, Mrunal joked, “Do you want to marry a girl who is manly with muscles? Go marry Bipasha Basu.” She also added, “Listen, I am far better than Bipasha, okay?”The video sparked massive backlash on social media, with many users criticising the body-shaming tone of the remarks.

“19-year-old me said many silly things”

Following the outrage, Mrunal shared a public apology, acknowledging her immaturity at the time.“19-year-old me as a teenager said many silly things. I didn’t always understand the weight of my voice or how much words, even in jest, could hurt. But it did, and for that I am deeply sorry,” she wrote.She further clarified, “My intent was never to body-shame anyone. It was playful banter in an interview that went too far. But I understand how it came across, and I truly wish I had chosen my words differently.”

Work front

Mrunal is gearing up for the release of Do Deewane Seher Mein. Directed by Ravi Udyawar and backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film stars Siddhant Chaturvedi opposite her and follows two socially awkward millennials in Mumbai navigating love and self-acceptance. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on February 20.
