Halle Berry never thought she’d get married again. Not after everything she’d been through, or so she thought, and until Van Hunt came along and changed the ‘Catwoman’s mind. After nearly six years together, Berry, 59, is now officially engaged to the musician who swept her off her feet, and she’s not shy about sharing how different this love feels.Recently, the 59-year-old actress opened up about the surprise proposal of her fiancé, how her past shaped her views, and why this relationship just works.
Halle Berry on her engagement to Van Hunt
On February 5, Berry confirmed the engagement, clearing up any rumors or mixed messages. The next night on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’, she laughed off the gossip that she’d turned Van down. “There’s some confusion that [Hunt] asked to marry me, and I said no,” she revealed. And then she clarified the whole confusion: “No, that’s not the case,” she told Fallon. “I did not say ‘no,’ we just don’t have a date. Of course, I said, ‘Yes, I would marry him.‘ ” She revealed that they haven’t set the day yet, but she joked that Hunt “did put a little ring on it.”Berry’s been with Van Hunt for nearly six years now, but if you’d asked her before, she would’ve said her wedding days were behind her. “After Van proposed, Halle needed a few months to get comfortable with the idea of getting married again,” the PEOPLE reported, adding that the proposal was “unexpected” and that Berry “really enjoys their relationship as it is.”The proposal completely caught her off guard. She loved their relationship as it was. “She loves him so much, though, and he makes her incredibly happy,” the report continued. “She feels very fortunate. She’s excited to be engaged.”When it comes to the wedding, they’re keeping it close — small but meaningful, with just friends and family.
Halle Berry’s take on marriage
Before Hunt proposed and she said yes, the ‘Never Let Go’ actress didn’t think she would marry one more time. But why so?Berry’s been married three times—David Justice, Eric Benét, and Olivier Martinez—and she has two kids from previous relationships. Those chapters were full of highs and lows, heartbreak and growth, all out in the open for everyone to see. After her last marriage, she stepped back, took time to heal, and really focused on herself. She called it a sabbatical from dating — a time to work out what she really wanted in a partner. For Berry, the idea of saying yes again wasn’t something she rushed into. She’s spent most of her life in the spotlight, and she never needed marriage to prove her love. That belief made her take her time after Van proposed. In fact, Hunt, who’s also been married before, revealed that he proposed to her back in June 2025. “I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” he told Today.com during their first joint interview. “It’s just out there floating. Maybe you can encourage her.”But for Berry, marriage isn’t about validation. “We don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don’t,” she told Today.com. “I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married.”
Halle Berry and Van Hunt: Their love story
Berry and Hunt’s love story is a little modern, a little old-fashioned. They met around 2020, introduced by Van’s brother, and at first, they just talked — think long texts, deep conversations, that kind of thing. Only later did they meet in person. By the 2021 Oscars, they walked the red carpet together, making it official for the world.Berry calls Hunt “my love, love, love, my sweetheart,” and she means it. On the other hand, he supports her, he’s there for her, and he’s got his own thing going as a Grammy-winning musician. Now that the couple is engaged and fans are eager to know all details about the wedding bells, Berry and Hunt reportedly want to keep things close-knit and intimate. As for the date? That’s yet to be decided and announced.
