Mariah Carey teases new plans for ‘Glitter’ ahead of the film's 25th anniversary
Mariah Carey’s 2001 film ‘Glitter’ is making a comeback after its rocky debut in the shadow of 9/11. With newfound enthusiasm from fans, Carey is thrilled to announce a special edition reissue of both the film and its accompanying soundtrack, which have recently enjoyed a nostalgic revival. Once dismissive of its failure, she now celebrates the film’s reinvigorated fandom.

Mariah Carey’s 2001 film ‘Glitter’ may not have spread its magic back in the day, but the movie carries a special place in her heart. The film, which originally arrived in theatres just 11 days after the devastating 9/11 attacks, was Mariah’s acting debut. Now, the singer-songwriter has revealed that new plans are underway for ‘Glitter.’

Mariah is excited about the new plans for ‘Glitter’

During a recent interview with Variety, Mariah, 56, was asked about the upcoming 25th anniversary of the film. Noting that the film has disappeared from streaming services in the last month, Carey confirmed there’s something in the works. “(There are) plans for a deluxe and a reissue, or maybe just one, I don’t know. We’re getting on top of it. I’m excited about it,” she shared.

‘Glitter’ was released in a challenging time

The movie, loosely based on Carey’s life story, was released on September 21, 2001, 10 days after the terrorist attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center, Washington D.C.’s Pentagon, and Pennsylvania’s Somerset County. Despite the anticipation surrounding Carey’s acting debut, the film struggled at the box office. As per IMDB, ‘Glitter’ made just USD 5.3 million worldwide.

Mariah Carey described the project as a disastrous flop

Over the years, the singer herself has spoken candidly about the disappointment she felt during that period. Reflecting on the film’s early reception, Carey told Variety, “I used to hate it. I used to be so like, ‘Why did I do that?’ ” describing the project as “a disastrous flop” that came during a particularly challenging phase in her life.“And then, you know, it became something that I really loved, and it just sort of took on its own thing,” she continued.

How fans are reviving ‘Glitter’

However, ‘Glitter’ has experienced an unexpected cultural revival. In recent years, fans have come around to appreciate the film and its soundtrack. The 2018 #JusticeForGlitter viral movement led to the soundtrack reaching the iTunes Top 10 albums chart, 17 years after its release.
