Confirmed! Lee Byung Hun, Han Ji Min to lead ‘The Americans’ Korean remake
The acclaimed American espionage thriller ‘The Americans’ is being reimagined for Korean audiences as ‘The Koreans.’ Starring the talented Lee Byung Hun and Han Ji Min, this new adaptation transports viewers to the tumultuous 1990s, where two North Korean agents masquerade as a typical family in South Korea to execute their covert operations.

‘The Americans’, a popular American drama series based on two Russian spies who reside in the US, is getting a Korean remake. The series that became a fan favourite at the time of its release, will now get a remake with Lee Byung Hun and Han Ji Min starring in the lead.

‘The Americans’ Korean remake confirmed

As per Deadline, Lee Byun Hun and Han Ji Min are all set and ready for a brand new project. The production process for the series has already begun. Eric Schrier, the head of international local originals, cited that when the idea first came forward he was “hesitant” about it and was unsure how a Korean remake for a show like this would look. The Hollywood Reporter further states that Schrier had a lot of things to consider befor ethe project could be brought to fruition. He shared, “I was the guy who developed The Americans. I’m still very close with Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, the originals’ creators, so I wasn’t so sure about this idea, because it’s all very near and dear to my heart.”He detailed on how the Korean team for the remake project were the one who inspired him the most to pursue the project. “It was really the passion of our Korean team that got me excited – and I could see that, because Korea is still divided, this could be a very culturally relevant story for the local audience, which is always the primary priority for our local original content.”

The show will reportedly be set in the 1990s, when reform was going on in the country, and democratisation and cultural modernisation had swept the land. The show will be focused on a Korean family hiding a secret that could very well lead to their ultimate demise if it were to ever get out.Sent to South Korea under a disguise, two North Korean spies build a life in order to infiltrate the country and its government from within. The upcoming series will be directed by none other than Ahn Gilho, who is best known for their work on ‘The Glory.’
