Singer-composer Adnan Sami has spoken candidly about the shift in his life and career after officially becoming an Indian citizen. He shared his thoughts during a chat with a trade analyst. Here’s what the singer has to say.

Adnan Sami says, ‘Main India ka hogaya’

In an interview with Komal Nahta, reflecting on the change citizenship brought, Adnan Sami said, “It was never difficult for me to get work in India when I was a Pakistani citizen. A lot of things changed after I got Indian citizenship. Main India ka ho gaya aur India mera ho gaya.”

Adnan Sami’s path to Indian citizenship

Adnan Sami became a naturalised Indian citizen on January 1, 2016. He had first entered India in March 2001 on a visitor’s visa and steadily built a strong career in the country’s music scene. His route to citizenship began after his Pakistani passport lapsed in 2015 without renewal, following which he sought legal status in India on humanitarian grounds.The Ministry of Home Affairs granted him citizenship under Section 6(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, a provision that allows naturalisation for individuals who have made significant contributions in fields like art and culture.

Support from Asha Bhosle and India’s music industry

In an earlier interview, Adnan had shared that limited opportunities and support within Pakistan’s music industry pushed him to consider a move to India. He also recalled how veteran singer Asha Bhosle’s encouragement played a key role in shaping his decision to build a career in the country. He further acknowledged India for welcoming his music and giving him the space to showcase his artistry.

A career spanning decades

Adnan Sami began his musical career in the early 1990s and gradually rose to become a well-known figure in Indian music through his albums and Hindi film songs. He gained widespread recognition with his album ‘Kabhi To Nazar Milao’, which turned out to be a massive hit.Celebrated for his versatility, Adnan Sami has worked across genres, including Indian classical, pop and film music. His contribution to the arts was honoured with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 2020.
