Newlyweds Tom Holland and Zendaya were too exhausted after promoting Spider-Man and The Odyssey to take Japan holiday, so they sent his parents instead, reveals Tom's father Dominic Holland
Tom Holland and Zendaya’s hectic film promotions left them too exhausted to take their Japan holiday.

Tom Holland and Zendaya have had an exceptionally busy year, travelling around the world to promote their respective films, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. After months of country-hopping and long-haul flights, however, the newlyweds were reportedly so exhausted that they decided to give away a luxury holiday in Japan that had been planned for them.Tom’s father, comedian and writer Dominic Holland, 59, revealed that his son and Zendaya, both 30, had been left drained by their hectic promotional schedules. Instead of taking the trip themselves, Tom offered the no-expense-spared holiday to his parents.

Tom Holland told his father he was ‘too tired’ to travel to Japan

Speaking at the Queen’s Park Book Festival in London, Dominic recalled how Tom had been working particularly hard while promoting The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.“So, you know that Tom had a few films out recently. He had The Odyssey out then he had Spider-Man. And he’s been tired, he’s been working unbelievably hard,” Dominic told the Daily Mail.According to him, Tom and Zendaya had travelled around the globe several times during the promotional campaign.“They’ve done probably twice around the globe to promote these films,” he said, adding that they had completed around 20 long-haul flights of approximately 10 hours each.Just three days after the London premiere, Tom apparently told his father about their upcoming holiday.“He said, ‘Dad, we’ve got this holiday to Japan’ and I said, ‘That’ll be nice Tom, you’ll enjoy it.’ And he said, ‘Dad it’s too far and I’m too tired. What I thought I’d do dad is that I’d send you and mum instead.’”

Dominic Holland jokes Japanese hotels were expecting Tom, not him

Dominic joked that while the trip turned out to be a luxurious experience, the hotels and restaurants had apparently been expecting a very different guest.“Being Tom Holland’s dad is… well, it was lovely going to Japan. It was first class travel, posh hotel,” he said. However, he joked that staff were disappointed when he arrived instead of the Hollywood star.“All these restaurants and hotels are expecting Tom Holland and in the strata of disappointment they are expecting Tom Holland and they get Dominic,” he said.Dominic added that even the famously polite Japanese hosts seemed momentarily underwhelmed.“The Japanese are very polite and servile people but even they went hmmm,” he joked.Continuing his self-deprecating humour, Dominic also quipped about his writing career, saying: “I’ve written 10 books and got exactly zero with me tonight which sums up my career.”

Tom Holland and Zendaya’s reported second wedding

The revelation comes amid continued interest in Tom and Zendaya’s relationship. Last month, reports claimed that the couple had tied the knot again at the five-star Beaverbrook Hotel in Surrey in a ceremony reportedly costing around £500,000.The venue is situated in the Surrey Hills, close to Tom’s hometown of Kingston-upon-Thames. The reported wedding was kept highly private, with guests and members of staff allegedly banned from using their mobile phones in an effort to prevent details from leaking. The sprawling 370-acre estate near Leatherhead was once owned by newspaper proprietor Lord Beaverbrook, who famously hosted influential figures including Winston Churchill. The property features 56 rooms and suites, as well as an on-site Japanese restaurant with hot-air-balloon-style dining tables.

Tom Holland says he has ‘found my person’

Tom eventually addressed months of speculation surrounding his relationship with Zendaya in an interview with Esquire UK in June.“I found my person, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” he said. The pair have been romantically linked since 2016 after meeting on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Despite their high-profile careers, they have largely kept their relationship private over the years. They made their first joint red-carpet appearance in five years at a photocall for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in Madrid on Monday.Tom has previously explained why he prefers not to walk red carpets alongside Zendaya at premieres. Speaking to Men’s Health, he said he avoids doing so because he feels the spotlight should remain on her.“It’s not my moment, it’s her moment, and if we go together, it’s about us,” he said.
