An Indian woman living in Chicago has opened up about her experience of staying in touch with people in India, saying she received calls from only two people during her three years in the US, apart from her immediate family. Her remarks came as she questioned why Indians who move abroad are often accused of becoming “detached” from those back home.Kanishka Jasoria shared her thoughts in an Instagram video, where she spoke about how communication and relationships can change after relocating overseas.
‘I’ve received calls from only two people’
“Whenever people move abroad, why does everyone living back in India say, ‘You’ve become detached’?” Jasoria said in the video. She then described the two calls she received. According to her, the first person asked how she was managing life without her family and how she had handled practical matters such as getting a loan. The second person, she said, questioned why she had moved abroad without informing them.“And you ask, ‘Why do you feel detached?’ There isn’t even a need to ask for a reason, bro,” Jasoria said. The video carried the text “Reality of NRI”, while Jasoria captioned the post, “Based on true events”.
‘Relationships need effort from both sides’
Jasoria’s comments focused on how moving to another country can affect personal relationships, particularly when communication is not reciprocated. Her experience also questioned the expectation that people living abroad should always be the ones making an effort to stay in touch with those back home. The video drew reactions from social media users, with several saying they could relate to her experience.“Sad but true,” one user commented.Another user shared their own experience after moving to Italy, saying that people in India had earlier warned they would forget them after moving abroad. However, after relocating, the person said they sometimes felt lonely and found it difficult to get responses when they called or messaged people back home.Another user wrote, “Sometimes distance reveals who really cares,” while another said, “Relationships need effort from both sides.”
