NEW DELHI: In a relief to persons with disabilities (PwD) owning cars, govt has extended the validity of exempted FASTags (free pass) from the existing one year to up to five years, depending on the degree of disability. The revised norms will come into effect from Oct 2, Gandhi Jayanti.Vehicles specially designed and built for PwDs, as well as vehicles registered under ownership type “Divyangjan”, under Motor Vehicles Act and rules are exempted from paying user fee on national highways. At present, the validity of such exempted FASTag is one year.

In a communication to NHAI, road transport ministry said that under the revised procedure for exempted FASTags for PwDs with 70% to 100% disability will be valid for five years, while those with more than 40% but less than 70% disability will be valid for three years.The ministry has linked the validity of the tags to the percentage of disability recorded in a valid disability certificate, Unique Disability Identity (UDID) card or other applicable records. The tags will be renewed, thereafter, subject to continued eligibility and compliance with National Highways Fee Rules.The ministry said the revised provision was aimed at avoiding recurring procedural requirements for issuance of exempted FASTags to eligible divyangjan/ PwD vehicle owners.
