Shefali Shah opens up on her first marriage with Harsh Chhaya in her memoir: 'Haven't named anyone but nobody is prepared for a divorce, nothing to hide about it'

Shefali Shah has opened up about her first marriage to actor Harsh Chhaya in her new memoir-in-essays, ‘The Audacity of Being’. While the actor has chosen to keep the details of the relationship private, she has written about the emotional experience of watching a marriage fall apart and what follows when a couple is unprepared for the possibility of divorce.Shefali made it clear that she has deliberately stayed away from naming people or discussing the specifics of what happened in her first marriage. “I’m not naming anyone in the book. I’m not even getting into what happened or didn’t happen. I’m just talking about what happens on a general scale when people get married and nobody’s prepared for a divorce,” she said in an interview with Indian Express.Shefali was earlier married to Harsh Chhaya. The actor later married filmmaker-producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah in 2000, and the couple has two sons, Aryaman and Maurya.According to Shefali, people often enter marriage imagining that it will inevitably lead to a happy ending. However, life does not always follow that script. She said, “the idea of a happily-ever-after”, adding, “Marriage may not necessarily pan out the way it is. And then, you just have no option but to deal with it.”The actor was also asked about the openness with which she has approached her personal life in the book, particularly while writing about the end of her first marriage. Shefali said she did not feel there was anything she needed to conceal, explaining, “There was nothing to really hide about. I think I’ve written about it very respectfully. I’m just talking about any marriage falling off the brink. There’s an entire thing about when you realise your marriage is falling apart. So it’s, I think, about the failure of a relationship.”However, her book goes well beyond her experiences with marriage and divorce. ‘The Audacity of Being’ explores love, heartbreak, friendships, community, ageing as an actor in Bollywood, creative insecurities, body image and the challenges of parenting.Shefali has described the book as “a sort of memoir”. When the book was announced, she had said, “Nothing in my life warrants a memoir. And yet, I chose to tell a story only I have the copyright to. I don’t promise an ingenious book, but what I do promise is absolute honesty.”With a career spanning more than three decades, Shefali has built a reputation for choosing varied and layered roles across films and streaming projects. Her work includes ‘Satya’, ‘Monsoon Wedding’, ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, ‘Jalsa’ and ‘Darlings’, apart from the Emmy-winning series ‘Delhi Crime’.The actor is also conscious that putting personal experiences into the public domain inevitably invites interpretation. Reflecting on that aspect of being open about her life, she said, “When you put yourself out there in the public domain, whether it’s on camera or when you are writing something, or even on Instagram, people will have a point of view.”
