NEW DELHI: Liquor shops in the national capital will remain closed on October 9 and 10 in view of the “prevailing” situation in the city, according to an order, cited by news agency PTI.The department said the decision to shut liquor vends was taken on the basis of inputs from the Delhi Police and as a preventive measure to maintain “public order”. The closure comes amid protests by opposition parties and other groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

A protest has also been called at Jantar Mantar on October 10 by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), while several student groups have joined demands for Kumar’s resignation. The groups have alleged that lakhs of voters were deleted from electoral rolls during the SIR exercise.More than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across Delhi ahead of the planned protest, a senior police officer said on Thursday. The officer said no permission had been granted for any protest at Jantar Mantar and appealed to people to stay away from unauthorised gatherings.“We are well prepared and motivated to handle the law-and-order situation in the city on Saturday. No permission has been granted so far for any protest at Jantar Mantar,” the officer said. The deployment has been made as a precautionary measure to prevent any breach of peace and ensure the smooth movement of traffic and people. Prohibitory orders are already in force in the area, police said.
