'Surrounded by 35 cops': CJP flags 'illegal' detention of Ratna Singh ahead of Jantar Mantar protest

NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday termed the detention of its founder and leaders “illegal”, alleging that the outfit’s head of legal affairs, Ratna Singh, was also being held inside a car by police. In the run-up to the proposed showdown at Jantar Mantar against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained shortly after arriving at Delhi airport from Mumbai. The party’s official handle said Ratna Singh was being detained inside a car, alleging that she was “surrounded by 35 cops and the DCP, who are refusing to let her out”.The detentions unfolded on Saturday, hours before the CJP’s planned protest at Jantar Mantar. Opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Left parties, had also expressed support for the demonstration and said they would join the protest. The CJP had called for the demonstration in the wake of the Election Commission’s large-scale special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The outfit is demanding the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
