NEW DELHI: Ratna Singh, legal affairs head of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has moved a Delhi court seeking registration of an FIR against police personnel. She has filed it alleging that police personnel confined her and prevented her from joining a lawyers’ protest against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). In her application filed on Saturday, Singh also sought a status report from the police on the alleged incident.Singh filed the application before chief metropolitan magistrate Abhinav Pandey at Saket district court. She has sought directions for registration of an FIR against the police personnel allegedly involved. She has also asked the court to call for a status report from the concerned authorities.According to the application, Singh is a practising advocate. She was proceeding towards the Supreme Court with two fellow advocates to participate in a protest by lawyers against the CEC and the SIR exercise.The plea alleges that Singh was later sitting in a car with advocate Tara Narula outside her residence when she was prevented from moving. Two cars allegedly blocked her vehicle from the front and rear. Police personnel remained outside the car, preventing her from proceeding further.Singh has alleged that the police personnel did not explain the legal basis for restricting her movement, despite her asking them to do so. She has described the alleged incident as wrongful restraint and confinement.The application also refers to a police call made in connection with the incident and provides details of the call. Singh has raised concerns over her safety and liberty. She has argued that the circumstances warrant urgent intervention by the court.Singh has further stated that a video of the alleged incident may be examined by the court. In her plea, she has claimed that her life and liberty are under threat. She has sought legal action against the personnel allegedly involved in restraining her.The application comes amid protests by members of the legal fraternity against the chief election commissioner and the SIR exercise. The proposed demonstration has brought attention to the right of lawyers to assemble and express their views, as well as the role of police authorities in regulating protests and maintaining law and order.
Lawyers detained near Supreme Court
On Saturday, a group of lawyers holding a protest march against the chief election commissioner and the SIR exercise were detained by personnel of the Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force near the Supreme Court.The detentions prompted the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to urgently approach Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The association wrote to the CJI about several advocates being detained while peacefully protesting outside the Supreme Court.According to the SCBA’s communication, the detained lawyers were taken to Yamuna Sports Complex. The association raised concerns over the detention and sought the CJI’s intervention.Following the SCBA’s urgent communication, the CJI conveyed to the authorities that the detained lawyers should be released.The detention of the lawyers and Singh’s allegations have brought the police action surrounding the protest into focus. While the lawyers were detained near the Supreme Court, Singh has alleged that police personnel separately prevented her from joining the demonstration.
