NEW DELHI: Several members of the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday after staging a flash protest outside Gate 7 of Rajiv Chowk metro station, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities. The protesters gathered at the busy metro station in Connaught Place, raising allegations of “vote chori” and seeking accountability from the Election Commission.“NSUI’s fight against vote chori will continue with full force until Gyanesh Kumar resigns,” said the organisation’s national media in-charge, Ravi Pandey. The demonstration followed another round of police action earlier in the day, when Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving at Jantar Mantar, where heavy barricading and security arrangements had been put in place. The protests come a day after Delhi Police de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site, amid growing demands from protesters for the CEC’s resignation. A march was organised by INDIA bloc leaders and supporters, led by Rahul Gandhi, along Barakhamba Road towards the Supreme Court on Monday. Subsequently, 11 opposition leaders moved the apex court, challenging the Election Commission’s decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
