‘Amar Singh Chamkila’: Meezaan Jafri reveals audition for Diljit Dosanjh’s role; ‘Wore pagdi and learned punjabi songs’
Meezaan Jafri revealed that he auditioned multiple times for Imtiaz Ali’s films, including the lead role in ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’. He prepared thoroughly but Diljit Dosanjh was ultimately chosen. Meezaan praised Diljit’s performance, which earned a Best Actor Emmy nomination. Meezaan debuted in ‘Malaal’ and acted in ‘Hungama 2’ and ‘Yaariyan 2’.​

Meezaan Jafri, son of Jaaved Jaaferi, opened up about his journey in the film industry, revealing that he has faced several auditions with director Imtiaz Ali over the years. The actor also disclosed that he had tried out for the role later played by Diljit Dosanjh in ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, though he didn’t make the final cut.

Talking to Varinder Chawla on his podcast, Meezaan said, “I have auditioned for Imtiaz (Ali) sir so many times. I auditioned for Chamkila. I did the full stache, wore the pagdi, and I even learnt one of Amar Singh Chamkila’s songs in Punjabi. A suitable actor had been taken up for the right role. No matter, I went for it dil se.”

Praise for Diljit Dosanjh’s performance

Speaking about Diljit playing the lead, he added, “Imtiaz sir made a great choice. He (Diljit) knows the language, he knows the flavour; it’s the world he comes from. And Diljit sir has absolutely smashed it in the film, which is why he was nominated for an Emmy as well.”

International Emmy Nominations for ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’

Diljit earned a Best Actor nod at the 53rd International Emmy Awards for ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, but Spanish performer Oriol Pla took the prize for Yo, Adicto. The project also vied for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series, falling short against Lost Boys and Fairies, which traces a gay couple from Cardiff through their adoption path.

Meezaan Jafri’s acting career

Meanwhile, Meezaan Jafri began his acting career with the 2019 romantic drama ‘Malaal’, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, where he played the role of Shiva Morey opposite debutante Sharmin Segal. Before stepping in front of the camera, he also assisted Bhansali as an assistant director on several films. After ‘Malaal’, Meezaan appeared in the films ‘Hungama 2’ and ‘Yaariyan 2.’
