Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando gets hospitalized amid social media controversy

Evan Dando, the iconic frontman of 90s alternative rock band The Lemonheads, has been hospitalized for mental health treatment following disturbing allegations. The 58-year-old musician entered a local facility on February 12 after a fan accused him of sending unsolicited explicit videos via social media.

Incident details

The controversy surfaced on The Underground Bunker when a fan, pseudonymously identified as Dawn, shared screenshots of their exchange on X, formerly Twitter. She had messaged Evan Dando last year to congratulate him on The Lemonheads’ album ‘Love Chant,’ released in October 2025. Evan Dando replied on February 4, “Cool I’m sorry I’m an exhibitionist.” Dawn responded supportively, “Don’t ever apologize for being you, my friend. Always be unapologetic. And you.” His representative confirmed the news to People magazine on February 13, framing it within his lifelong struggles.Evan Dando then asked if he could send an “art” photo, followed by a video allegedly showing him doing something inappropriate. Dawn recounted, “I put the phone down and just sat there and waited for [my husband] to wake up. I wasn’t sure how to process it.” The next day, Evan Dando sent another video plus messages: “ok sorry thanks I just need an outlet” and “cheers.” Dawn said, “I’ve never felt anger like that. Don’t call me an outlet, that’s gross.” Evan Dando deactivated his X account afterward but reactivated it briefly before taking it offline again.

Official response

Evan Dando’s rep issued a statement saying “Evan Dando has long struggled with mental health issues dating back to his childhood. He’s been admitted to a local hospital where he’s receiving comprehensive help from experienced doctors and mental health professionals.” The rep declined further comment on the allegations themselves.Evan Dando’s wife, Antonia Teixeira, told The Boston Globe that her husband experienced a “manic episode” and is “really trying to get better.” The couple, married in Brazil in 2024, had seemed on an upward path.

Past struggles

Evan Dando has been open about his battles in his 2025 memoir Rumors of My Demise. He described hitting rock bottom: “I was in horrible shape, losing teeth. And living off cheeseburgers, which I could barely chew, Marlboro Reds, purple Powerade, and a $200 daily drug budget.” Evan Dando quit heroin, speed, and cocaine by February 2021 but admitted to The New York Times he still used over-the-counter substances and pot, alongside Vyvanse for ADHD. “I don’t believe God meant us to be sober. Why would monks make booze? I just know that heroin is really, really satanic for me,” Evan Dando said.
