‘There are no safe spaces’: Marlon Wayans aims to ‘cancel the cancel culture’ with ‘Scary Movie 6’

With ‘Scary Movie 6’ on the way, Marlon Wayans has one big goal: bring real comedy back and call out cancel culture. He wants people to laugh again, no tiptoeing around or worrying about who might get offended. The new film isn’t just riffing on horror movies; it’s taking a swing at the idea that comedians have to censor themselves just to survive online.

Scary Movie 6’: The trailer

Marlon Wayans is back at the center of ‘Scary Movie’, the series he started with his brothers Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans over 25 years ago, and he’s bringing the whole crew with him. This time, he’s ready to show off the first trailer for the big comeback. The trailer wastes no time. In the first few seconds, Michael Tiddes, who’s directing the movie, throws Marlon and his brothers right into the thick of it. They co-wrote the film, and you can tell they’re ready to roast every horror hit from the last twenty years. You’ve got the slasher from ‘Heart Eyes’, the freaky robot ‘M3GAN’, both causing havoc on a New York subway. It instantly brings ‘Scream 6’ to mind, with its move from sleepy suburbs to the big city.Speaking of ‘Scream’, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s meta-slasher was always at the heart of ‘Scary Movie’, which is here as well. In one spectacular moment, ‘M3GAN’ is dancing, then rips off her costume, and it’s Ghostface underneath, shining knife and all. The first kill drops, and the movie’s tone is set: “Oh my God, he stabbed her!” someone yells. The victim, not missing a beat, shouts, “I’m not her! My pronouns are they/them. He stabbed them!” Talk about cheeky! Then Marlon steps in as Shorty Meeks, fan-favorite stoner, and looks straight at the camera: “We back!” He’s not shy about the mission here. “We want to bring back laughter,” Marlon told Entertainment Weekly. “Comedy, the way it used to be. And honestly, the only way to do that is to cancel cancel culture.”The trailer doesn’t pull punches. “There are no safe spaces,” it warns. Anna Faris is back as Cindy Campbell, getting wild with Ghostface in a way only Scary Movie would dare. Kids get launched into space, a little girl unwraps a present from a Terrifier spoof and finds a severed pair of testicles, she just shrugs and drops them, “What the f—?”

Marlon Wayans on ‘Scary Movie 6’

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, just before dropping a first look at the long-awaited return of ‘Scary Movie’, Marlon set the record straight: Scary Movie 6 isn’t just a reboot. “It’s a rebooquel,” he said, mixing reboot and sequel, in classic ‘Scary Movie’ style. That’s not all. “This movie’s for everybody,” Marlon said, thinking out loud about the new generation. “It’s a multi-generational conversation. We need this, from our generation all the way down to, what is it now? Gen Alpha. And everyone’s included.”For Marlon, it’s about going back to what made ‘Scary Movie’ work. “We’re gonna do what we always do: make fun of everybody. We’re equal opportunity offenders,” he said. “We have a recipe, a formula you can’t really copy. You can try, but it’s ours. It’s how we grew up, how we see the world. It’s our family’s sense of humor, straight from our mom.”The whole shoot was a blast, Marlon says. “We laughed the whole way through. We let everyone cut loose and improvise, and you’ll see it everywhere in the movie. So many references: ‘Sinners’, ‘Longlegs’, ‘Get Out’, ‘Smile’, you name it.”

‘Scary Movie’: The legacy

It’s been over two decades since Marlon and his brothers worked on ‘Scary Movie’, the last one was 2001’s ‘Scary Movie 2’. Both movies were smash hits, but the Wayans family split with the franchise before number three, after a falling out with Dimension Films’ Bob Weinstein. Now, Marlon says three things brought him back: the “dismantling of the Weinstein regime,” his dad urging him to work with his brothers again, and, as he puts it, “God,” telling him, “This is what you should be doing.”He sums it up: “I got me and my brothers together to come back to the franchise we were pushed out of. The job now? Bring back the cast, bring back the Wayans, and bring back big-ass laughs. The world needs a big-ass laugh.”

‘Scary Movie 6’: All we know

‘Scary Movie 6’ isn’t just another sequel, it’s a “rebooquel,” mixing old-school callbacks with fresh material that pushes the series somewhere new. Fans have waited nearly 25 years for this. Marlon Wayans is back, along with Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris as Cindy, and Regina Hall as Brenda. They’re bringing in some new faces, too. The story jumps forward in time, dropping these familiar characters right into the middle of all the ridiculous, risky scenarios you expect, roasting modern horror movies and today’s pop culture along the way. With Michael Tiddes as the director, and the Wayans family writing the script with their longtime partner Rick Alvarez, they’re promising the same wild energy, sharp jokes, and jokes that aren’t afraid to go for it, even if the topics are a little spicy.‘Scary Movie 6’ takes aim at today’s horror hits like ‘M3GAN’, the recent Scream sequels, and ‘Get Out’, but it doesn’t stop there. The movie sends up all the endless remakes, reboots, and spin-offs that have taken over the genre. It’s slated to release on June 5, 2026.
