34,878 cases registered against juveniles, 11.2% rise over 2023

NEW DELHI: NCRB’s ‘Crime In India’ report brings into focus a worrying trend, with 34,878 cases being registered against juveniles during 2024, marking an increase of 11.2% over 2023 (31,365 cases).A total of 42,633 juveniles were apprehended in 34,878 cases, out of which 34,648 juveniles were apprehended under cases of IPC and BNS.The majority of juveniles in conflict with law who were apprehended were in the age group of 16 years to 18 years (77.7%) (33,129 out of 42,633) during 2024.As far as education qualifications go, 2,857 were illiterate, 8,989 juveniles had studied up to primary level, 21,068 had education levels between primary to matriculation, and 8,301 had education above matric to higher secondary.Data on background with regard to living arrangements showed that most juveniles in conflict with law were living with parents (36,905). As many as 3,516 juveniles lived with guardians and 2,216 were homeless.
