Sam Levinson weighs in on ‘Euphoria’ season 3’s direction and Nate Jacob’s fate

For the unversed, the latest episode of ‘Euphoria’ ends with Nate Jacobs getting buried alive in the desert because of the debt he owes, Cassie getting taken as well, and a whole lot of drama that was never expected. Levinson has made sure to raise the stakes with every upcoming episode. While talking to Esquire about the same, he was clear on one thing: that he wanted to give the audience what they wanted. It was only a matter of how to present what they wanted.Talking about the same, he commented that “I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma, and with that in mind, I always think, ‘Well, how can I give it to them? How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn’t so sure they wanted it?’”He also added that he wanted the audience to question their choices and needs from the show. Nate Jacobs is buried alive in the blazing desert. While they do give him a pipe to ensure that he has some access to air, it ends up becoming the reason behind his untimely demise as a rattlesnake crawls through the space and bites him. With Jacob’s haunting cries of wanting to be released, Levinson wanted to raise the question of “‘Oh God, I don’t know. Should he have had it better? Did he deserve it?’” in the audience’s mind.As for the snake, Levinson also shared that they used a non-venomous snake for its shots with Jacob Elordi in the coffin, though the surface shots that show the snake slithering up to the pipe’s opening were all done with the real venomous species!
