Adnan Sami is not someone people forget, thanks to his iconic songs which continue to be remembered more than two decades later – be it ‘Lift Kara De’ or ‘Tera Chehra’. The singer is back with a new single called ‘Lipstick’. Apart from his music, Adnan recently has been in the news because of his political views. Earlier this year, his meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat sparked criticism and online trolling. Born in Pakistan, Adnan renounced his Pakistani citizenship and became an Indian citizen in 2016. Despite openly expressing his love for India, sections of people continue to question his patriotism because of his roots. In a recent interview, Adnan spoke about it. When asked if he has come to terms with the scrutiny surrounding his identity, Adnan responded in an interview with HT City, “Main unko maaf karta hun, they will learn eventually.”He further explained why choosing a nationality as an adult carries deeper meaning than inheriting one by birth. “If they have got that mindset, it’s their problem. You were born into something you didn’t put any effort into acquiring. But when you make a choice as an adult to make such a drastic change, it’s a very calculated and thought after decision. You analysed every facet and chose that after deliberation. Such people are more dedicated as they don’t take it for granted. They didn’t inherit it, they had to fight and struggle for it.”Recalling the long and difficult journey he faced before officially becoming an Indian citizen, Adnan said, “I had to fight for over 18 years and there were many rejections along the way. I just didn’t scream about it in public. I have been subjected to a tremendous amount of scrutiny on both sides of the border. But when you acquire it [Indian citizenship], your loyalty is greater than anyone. So, when someone questions it, I just laugh at them as they inherited it, but I fought for it.
