Caleb Yirenkyi struck deep into stoppage time to hand Ghana a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L clash at the FIFA World Cup 2026.Just when the contest appeared destined to end in a frustrating stalemate, Brandon Thomas-Asante burst down the left flank in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time and fired a dangerous cross across the face of goal. Yirenkyi arrived at the perfect moment to tap home from close range, sparking wild celebrations among the Black Stars players and supporters. The late strike denied Panama what would have been their first-ever World Cup point and ensured Ghana began their campaign with maximum points. The only two winning goals scored in the 90th minute or later at the tournament so far have both delivered 1-0 victories for African nations, after Amad Diallo’s late winner helped Côte d’Ivoire edge Ecuador.
Tight encounter produces few clear-cut opportunities
Played in rainy conditions at BMO Field, the match offered little attacking quality for long spells.Panama came closest in the opening minutes when Cecilio Waterman connected with Amir Murillo’s low cross, only for Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi to make a sharp save. The shot proved to be the only effort on target in the first half.Ati-Zigi, however, paid a physical price for his efforts. After enduring a couple of heavy collisions, the goalkeeper was forced off at halftime and was replaced by Benjamin Asare. As the game progressed, both teams struggled to break down organised defences. Ghana enjoyed more possession but found Panama difficult to unlock, while the Central Americans threatened occasionally on the counterattack. The match finally sprang to life after the hour mark. Thomas-Asante almost created an opener for Jordan Ayew in the 65th minute, only for defender Jiovany Ramos to produce a superb last-ditch tackle.
Black Stars join England at top of Group L
Ghana entered the tournament without midfielder Thomas Partey, who was denied entry into Canada while awaiting trial on rape charges in England.Despite his absence, the Black Stars found a way to secure all three points. The result leaves Ghana level on points with England, who defeated Croatia 4-2 earlier, with the Black Stars sitting second in Group L on goal difference. Panama are third, while Croatia occupy the bottom spot after the opening round of fixtures.
