‘I can’t tell you how confusing it was’: ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ star Shweta Tripathi says going back to the original Golu felt emotionally overwhelming

The makers of ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ recently unveiled the film’s first teaser, confirming that the beloved crime saga is making its leap from streaming to the big screen. Set to hit theatres on September 4, the film reunites iconic characters like Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu, Munna and Golu Gupta, promising fans another thrilling chapter in the ‘Mirzapur’ universe. For actor Shweta Tripathi, however, stepping back into Golu’s shoes came with an unexpected challenge. While the excitement of returning to the franchise remained intact, revisiting the innocent version of her character from Season 1 after nearly a decade proved emotionally disorienting.

Revisiting Golu’s past wasn’t easy

Speaking to India Today about the transition from the web series to cinema, Shweta revealed that the shooting process itself wasn’t drastically different from filming the show’s previous seasons. According to her, the performance and pace remained largely unchanged despite the shift to the big screen.“It was not fast-paced. Actually, the filming took as much time as it should have. So in terms of acting or performance, it was not different.”The real challenge, she explained, was travelling back in time to portray a version of Golu who hadn’t yet experienced the devastating events that transformed her over the years. After spending three seasons portraying a revenge-driven Golu, Shweta admitted that slipping back into the cheerful, carefree young woman from Season 1 initially felt overwhelming.“I have spent so many years with the emotion of revenge and frustration. Sweety was no more, and Bablu died; all her dreams were snatched away. And now suddenly, Sweety is standing in front of you, and Bablu is here. Guddu is back to what he was… and not to how Golu was feeling about him in the previous season.”The actor confessed that the emotional reset didn’t happen overnight. “Day one, I can’t tell you how confusing it was. I didn’t understand. I was confused because I didn’t know… In season one, Golu was a different girl. But then slowly it all fell into place.” For Shweta, it was less about remembering dialogues and more about reconnecting with a version of Golu that had existed before heartbreak, loss and vengeance shaped her personality.

From fan to cast member

Beyond playing Golu Gupta, Shweta described herself as one of the biggest admirers of the franchise. She said watching ‘Mirzapur’ arrive in theatres is something she is personally looking forward to as a fan. “And now I can’t wait to watch it with everybody because, before anything, I am a fan of ‘Mirzapur’. So when it will be on the big screen, it will be fun.”She also revealed that after seeing a cinema screen recently, she immediately sent a picture to her co-stars, imagining the excitement of watching ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ unfold before a packed theatre audience.Directed as the cinematic continuation of the acclaimed crime franchise, ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ brings back Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu Sharma, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi and Jitendra Kumar. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 4.
