Veteran rapper and singer Lauryn Hill was recently honoured for her contributions to the music industry at this year’s BET Awards. Not only that, but the star was also honoured with a dazzling performance from some of the biggest names in the industry right now, including stars like Queen Latifah, SZA, Doechii, Doja Cat, Nas and many more.Lauryn Hill honored at the BET Awards this yearThe rapper was honoured with the Living Legend Icon Award at the event recentlyIce Cube took the stage to start the tribute to Lauryn Hill, who has been a pioneering force in the music industry for decades. He welcomed her on stage and gave her flowers, further adding, “One of the greatest voices in Black music history. She achieved the depths of her complexity that defined her artistry.”Not only that, but the singer was also serenaded by many artists on stage to pay tribute to her. War & Treaty started off the performance of ‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow’, which Tanya Trotter had performed with Hill in the film ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.’ This was followed by many other stars who have collaborated or worked with Hill over the past couple of years in her time in the industry.SZA and Doechii took the stage and performed the Fugees’ song ‘Ready or Not’ along with a live band. After this, Tierra Whack and Tems performed the song ‘Fu-Gee-La’. The biggest surprise was her daughter, Selah Marley, coming on stage to perform the title track of ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.’YG Marley, Doja Cat, Nas, Queen Latifah, Common, and many others took to the stage to perform.Lauryn Hill gives her accepting speech and performs ‘Ex-Factor’Hill also accepted her award for the night and took to the stage to talk about the honor. She stated, “I have always cared about the expression and the representation of the dignity of our people. So we put ourselves sometimes as artists, we put ourselves in situations to say things that aren’t always comfortable, but we understand that people will understand later. I fight for y’all. Everybody might not know about it, but I fight for y’all. And fight for y’all, it’s fighting for me.”After all of the tribute performances, Hill herself took to the BET Award stage to perform her hit song, ‘Ex-Factor.’ She also revealed during the performance that she was not meant to be performing; however, someone had to step back from the tribute performance at the last minute.
