Lamine Yamal has added another milestone to his extraordinary rise after becoming the youngest player to make six FIFA World Cup appearances. The Spain winger reached the landmark by featuring in his country’s quarter-final against Belgium, setting the outright record for the most World Cup matches played by any footballer aged 18 or younger. The achievement is the latest chapter in a career that has consistently rewritten age-related records. Already a UEFA Euro 2024 winner with Spain, Yamal has seamlessly carried that form into his first senior World Cup, establishing himself as one of the tournament’s standout young players before even celebrating his 19th birthday.

A record no teenager has reached before

Yamal was born on 13 July 2007, meaning he reached his sixth World Cup appearance at 18 years, 11 months and 28 days old.By appearing in Spain’s three group-stage matches, their Round of 32 victory and now the quarter-final against Belgium, he surpassed every previous player aged 18 or younger in World Cup history. His sixth appearance moves him clear of previous teenage benchmarks set by some of football’s biggest names, underlining just how rapidly he has become an indispensable figure for Spain on the international stage.

World Cup breakthrough continues remarkable rise

The 2026 tournament marks Yamal’s first FIFA World Cup, having already helped Spain win UEFA Euro 2024.His biggest moment of the competition so far arrived during Spain’s 4-0 group-stage victory over Saudi Arabia on 21 June 2026.

At 18 years, 11 months and eight days old, Yamal scored Spain’s opening goal, becoming Spain’s second-youngest World Cup goalscorer behind Gavi, who scored against Costa Rica at the 2022 World Cup aged 18 years and 110 days. The strike also placed Yamal among the youngest goalscorers in tournament history, making him the youngest player since Pelé in 1958 to score the opening goal of a World Cup match.

The timeline of a prodigy

Yamal’s rise at international level has been remarkably swift. He made his senior Spain debut on 8 September 2023 against Georgia at 16 years and 57 days old, becoming Spain’s youngest-ever player. He marked the occasion by scoring in a 7-1 victory, immediately becoming the nation’s youngest goalscorer as well.

Less than three years later, he has progressed from international debutant to World Cup record-holder, establishing himself as one of Spain’s first names on the teamsheet throughout the tournament.

How Yamal compares with other teenage World Cup stars

Yamal’s achievement stands out even among football’s greatest young talents.Pelé made his World Cup debut for Brazil in 1958 at 17 years and 235 days old, going on to play four matches, score six goals and win the tournament. Despite his legendary campaign, he made fewer World Cup appearances as a teenager than Yamal has already accumulated.Mexico’s Gilberto Mora, who debuted at the 2026 World Cup aged 17 years and 240 days, also finished with fewer appearances than the Spanish winger.Spain teammate Gavi previously held the country’s teenage benchmark after playing four matches at the 2022 World Cup before turning 19.

Already ahead of football’s modern greats

Yamal’s development has also accelerated far beyond the timelines of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Before turning 19, Messi had made roughly 50 senior club appearances and scored nine goals before making his World Cup debut in 2006.Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, was still establishing himself at Sporting CP at the same age and would not make his World Cup debut until 2006.By comparison, Yamal has already surpassed 50 professional goals and recorded more than 50 assists for club and country within three years of making his Barcelona debut, while simultaneously becoming the youngest player ever to reach six FIFA World Cup appearances. At just 18 years old, the Spain winger continues to redefine what is possible for teenage footballers on the sport’s biggest stage.
