Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez has spoken publicly for the first time since his side’s FIFA World Cup final defeat to Spain, insisting he remains proud to represent his country despite the painful end to their title defence. Argentina’s hopes of retaining the World Cup crown ended with a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain at New York New Jersey Stadium on Monday. Ferran Torres struck the decisive goal after Enzo Fernandez had been sent off late in the contest, leaving Lionel Scaloni’s men to finish the match with 10 players. The Chelsea midfielder was shown two yellow cards during the final. After being cautioned for dissent earlier in the game, Fernandez received his marching orders in second-half stoppage time following a late challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi. A day after the heartbreaking defeat, the 25-year-old shared an emotional message on Instagram, reflecting on the team’s journey and highlighting that their effort and commitment meant more than the result itself. “As time goes by, you understand that there’s something much bigger than a result. For years, this group has represented us in the best way. They teach us that competing isn’t just about winning, but about giving everything for the shirt and never giving up.
