Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged people to celebrate National Handloom Day with the same enthusiasm they showed for Friendship Day, making a heartfelt appeal in yet another Instagram video aimed at connecting directly with Gen Z.In the video, PM Modi said that just as people enthusiastically exchanged friendship bands and celebrated their bonds with loved ones, they should now come together to honour India’s rich handloom tradition. He encouraged citizens to buy and wear handloom products, saying that every purchase strengthens the livelihoods of lakhs of weavers while preserving the country’s centuries-old cultural heritage.

“Just as you celebrated Friendship Day with great warmth, celebrate Handloom Day too,” the PM said, urging people to make handloom a part of their daily lives rather than limiting it to a symbolic occasion. He noted that every handloom product carries with it the story of an artisan’s hard work, skill and dedication.PM Modi also highlighted the role of India’s weaving community in keeping traditional crafts alive across generations. He said that choosing handloom products is not merely a matter of fashion but also a way of supporting the country’s artisans and promoting the spirit of ‘Vocal for Local’.The appeal comes ahead of National Handloom Day, observed annually on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905 and to recognise the contribution of India’s handloom sector to the country’s cultural and economic fabric. The Centre has been marking the day since 2015 through various initiatives aimed at promoting indigenous textiles and encouraging consumers to support local weavers.The Instagram video is the latest in a series of direct-to-camera messages posted by the Prime Minister on social media, a format that has drawn significant public attention in recent weeks.
