Sanjay Kapoor says ‘Sirf Tum’ success couldn’t give his career the push he expected: ‘When a film did great, people didn’t give me any credit’

Sanjay Kapoor recently opened up about a surprising and frustrating chapter of his Bollywood journey. He revealed that the massive success of his 1999 hit ‘Sirf Tum’ did not translate into fresh film offers. Despite the film becoming one of the most talked-about romantic dramas of its time, the actor said his career failed to take off the way one would expect.

In an interview with Digital Commentary, Sanjay Kapoor recalled how baffling the aftermath of the film’s success was for him. He said, “‘Sirf Tum’ was such a huge hit that today, even after 27 years, we are talking about it. But look at my destiny; I didn’t sign a single film after Sirf Tum.”He added that despite the film’s popularity, producers did not approach him with new projects, leaving him puzzled about the industry’s response to his success.

The actor also pushed back against the narrative that his career was largely defined by failures. He pointed out that while his flops were widely discussed, his hits rarely earned him similar recognition. He said, “People easily take my name when a film flops, but when a film did great, people didn’t give me any credit.”Sanjay Kapoor further defended the film’s content, insisting that its success went beyond its popular soundtrack. The actor said, “Apart from having superhit songs, the script of ‘Sirf Tum’ was unbelievable,” pointing out that the film’s lead pair does not meet until the very end.

Career highs and struggles

Sanjay Kapoor’s other major success came with ‘Raja’ (1995), which arrived after his troubled debut ‘Prem’, a film that took eight years to complete and ultimately flopped at the box office. Interestingly, ‘Raja’ director Indra Kumar has previously spoken about how ‘Prem’s failure made him apprehensive about working with Sanjay again. However, backed by Madhuri Dixit, choreographer Saroj Khan and a strong writing team, ‘Raja’ went on to become a massive hit.Despite delivering two significant box-office successes, Sanjay admitted that the road to becoming a consistent leading man remained difficult throughout his career.The actor had also previously spoken about his film ‘Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe’, which completed 25 years recently. Though the film flopped commercially, Sanjay said it pushed him to broaden his range as an actor and try different kinds of roles.
