US ambassador to India Sergio Gor said US president Donald Trump had placed significant trust in India and invested heavily in bilateral ties since the beginning of his second term.“President Trump trusts India, and he has invested heavily in this relationship from day one. Just weeks into his second term, he and Prime Minister Modi launched a trust initiative, transforming the relationship and utilizing strategic technologies to accelerate cooperation in AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, defense, and critical minerals,” Gor said.“In my first few months in India, Delhi hosted the Global AI Summit. And even though it was called the Global AI Summit, 90% of those companies are American. And why was it held in India? Because this is the crossroads where we can take things forward,” he added.Gor was speaking at the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) National Convention 2026.Earlier, Gor also endorsed Trump’s renewed push for stricter nationwide voter identification laws under the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) America Act.Citing India’s 2024 general election as a global benchmark for voter authentication, Gor backed Trump’s view that robust, universal photo identification is essential to maintaining election integrity. He also pointed to the scale and mechanisms of India’s voting system as a model for reforming US election procedures.“President Donald J Trump is absolutely correct! 646 MILLION voters, every single one required an ID in India’s last election. Congress should pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT!” Gor said in a post on X.

Gor’s remarks followed a post by Trump on Truth Social, in which he cited a recent exchange involving India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Trump said Kumar had asked the US administration, “How can you have Elections in the US without a valid Photo ID?”In the post, Trump recalled remarks attributed to Kumar earlier this month regarding voter identification requirements in the US.“Earlier this month, India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration — How can you have Elections in the US without a valid Photo ID? India’s last Election had 646,000,000 Voters! Less than 1 per cent voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID Photo Identity Document. We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now!” Trump said. The White House and the Trump administration have drawn comparisons between election administration in the US and India, arguing that the US relies more heavily on self-attestation of citizenship than some other countries.According to the White House, the legislation seeks to ensure that only US citizens participate in federal elections.
