The two fielders positioned at deep mid-wicket and long-on were mere spectators as Dhruv Jurel moved to 95, within striking distance of a well-deserved hundred. There was a slight delay for the right-hander as the ground staff rushed in with the big covers. However, the match resumed and when the moment finally happened, relief was written all over the youngster’s face as he took off his helmet.Jurel took his sweet time getting from 99 to three figures, and the 100th run was almost suicidal as he just hit and ran for his life. The fielder at mid-off collected cleanly but couldn’t hit the stumps. A diving Jurel reached the magical number, stood up, soaked in the moment and celebrated with his overjoyed partner Mohammed Siraj, who played his part by holding up one end.There were so many storylines for this series, but Jurel’s was the most important. Not Devdutt Padikkal at No. 3 and not Manav Suthar as the finger spinner, but Jurel as the specialist batter, and whether he had it in him to retain his spot for the remainder of the cycle. The Indian team management has been mighty impressed with his work ethic and technique but was running out of patience with his inability to make meaningful contributions.

After the whitewash against South Africa, where he scored only 29 runs in four innings, the pressure mounted further, and the message conveyed was, “time to show that you are more than just a wicketkeeper-batter”. The think tank backed him ahead of other specialist options for a spot in the Playing XI because of what they saw in the nets and on shadow tours. However, when this didn’t translate into consistency in Indian whites, his clock was set on borrowed time.In more ways than one, this was a make-or-break series for Jurel. Sarfaraz Khan was breathing down his neck, and the time was right to make his India A exposure in Galle count. Jurel didn’t have the most ideal outing in the warm-up fixture in Colombo. He looked far from comfortable in the nets and during match simulations. However, come match day, he turned the switch on and contributed with a crucial 51-run knock lower down the order.The confidence from his Test runs showed in the only net session he had in Colombo, as he comfortably dealt with spin and launched plenty into the stands while batting alongside the likes of Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. His movements looked far more assured and the connections sounded sweeter.

Day 1 and Day 2 at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground were an extension of the fun he was having near the centre wicket two days before the Test, but the relentlessness of the Sri Lankan quicks forced him to grind out a hundred he will remember for a very long time. He started the repair job with Ravindra Jadeja before the left-hander started facing discomfort in his wrist and was eventually dismissed for 43 on the opening day. Then came debutant Saransh Jain, and the immediate goal was to survive the remainder and ensure there were no further casualties heading into the second day.The goal was accomplished, but the suspense surrounding Rishabh Pant, who took a blow on his wrist, left a mixed feeling before normalcy returned on the second day. Saransh was dismissed early, and Pant walked in to join Jurel in the middle. The two wicketkeepers, with their contrasting styles of play, survived the early pressure. Once they settled in, it was a period of fluency and absolute control.India scored at nearly 4.5 an over when the two were in the middle, and they never looked to be in any urgency to press on the accelerator. Yes, it can look a bit different with Pant, but even he wasn’t at his freakish best as the runs accumulated at a very healthy rate. Jurel tackled the short-ball plan with a lot of control and looked equally at ease against the spin twins Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha. It was the kind of pitch that would reward patience as a batter, and Jurel definitely learned from his teammates, staying away from playing loose shots.

The Indian camp invested in Jurel, allowing him time to grow and learn on the job. When impatience was growing, the wicketkeeper-batter showed why the trust in his batting abilities wasn’t misplaced. Runs at No. 7 are gold dust, and the last Test hundred from No. 7 or lower for India was Nitish Kumar Reddy’s 114 at the MCG in December 2024. Jurel is also only the second Indian batter after Hardik Pandya (108 at Pallekele in 2017) to score a hundred from No. 7 or lower for India in Sri Lanka.If Jurel can continue this volume, he will solve a very crucial batting piece for captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir.
