The filmmaker, who has worked across Tamil and Telugu cinema, recently revisited a challenging phase in his career when a scheduling clash forced him to choose between two major projects.Vishnuvardhan had to step away from ‘Billa 2’, his planned reunion with Ajith Kumar following the success of ‘Billa’. When the schedules became difficult to align, he decided to honour his earlier commitment to the Telugu star.

Vishnuvardhan says walking away from Ajith’s ‘Billa 2’ was difficult

Speaking to Gulte, Vishnuvardhan recalled the difficult circumstances surrounding his exit from ‘Billa 2’. The sequel had been announced as a follow-up to his successful collaboration with Ajith, making the decision to step away particularly challenging.“It was one of the most difficult situations I had faced,” the filmmaker said, reflecting on the decision.Despite his comfort level with Ajith and the anticipation surrounding their reunion, Vishnuvardhan ultimately chose to proceed with his existing commitment to ‘Panjaa’. ‘I committed to Pawan Sir first’: Why Vishnuvardhan chose ‘Panjaa’

Vishnuvardhan explained that ‘Panjaa’ was already progressing, with producer Shobu Yarlagadda and the rest of the team working on the project. He felt that backing out at that stage could have affected the film and the people who had already committed their time and resources.“Ethically and professionally, I had committed to Pawan Sir first,” he said. The filmmaker also revealed that Ajith understood his predicament and accepted the decision. According to Vishnuvardhan, the actor was “magnanimous enough to understand” why he had to honour his commitment to ‘Panjaa’.Vishnuvardhan admitted that the situation was especially difficult because he had a strong working relationship with both actors. Ultimately, however, he felt that keeping his word to Pawan Kalyan was the right professional choice.

‘Billa 2’ went ahead with Chakri Toleti

Vishnuvardhan’s decision meant that he missed the opportunity to direct Ajith in ‘Billa 2’. The sequel was eventually helmed by Chakri Toleti and released in 2012. At the same time, choosing ‘Panjaa’ allowed Vishnuvardhan to collaborate with Pawan Kalyan and explore a different action-driven cinematic space. The film also became another significant project in his career as he continued working across Tamil and Telugu cinema.
