NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted searches at the residence of Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Nadimul Haque and six other premises across Delhi, West Bengal and Jharkhand. The move comes as part of a money laundering investigation linked to Urdu newspaper Akhbar-E-Mashriq.The searches, which began early Monday, were carried out by the ED’s Kolkata zonal office in Kolkata, Delhi and Ranchi in connection with a case against Akhbar-E-Mashriq Pvt Ltd and its director Mohd Nadimul Haque. The operation was conducted in coordination with security forces and the state police forces concerned.According to officials, the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) was registered after an FIR was filed by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate in West Bengal.The case involves “allegations concerning publication and dissemination of material promoting communal disharmony and also contains allegations regarding illegal transactions, unaccounted cash transactions and funding from suspicious sources.”The agency is examining the financial dealings of the newspaper, Haque and other entities and individuals named in the case to trace the alleged proceeds of crime and establish the money trail.During the searches, ED teams are collecting documentary and digital evidence as part of the investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
