Parvathy Thiruvothu says celebrity silence during student protests is ‘a very one-sided relationship’

Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu has spoken about the responsibility of film celebrities to stand with young people during difficult times. The actor, who has faced criticism for taking public positions on social and political issues, said she believes artists cannot remain silent when the same youth who support their careers are facing serious problems.

Parvathy Thiruvothu says celebrities must speak up during student protests

Speaking to Galatta Plus, Parvathy addressed the criticism aimed at celebrities who stayed silent during the recent student protests in New Delhi. She said she finds it unfair when actors and filmmakers choose not to respond to the struggles of ordinary people, especially youngsters who have played a major role in their success. “Some people have attained a certain status because of ordinary people and students. In our industry, there are actors, filmmakers and writers who are deified. Their movies are made successful by the youth. When they (the youth) are in trouble and if not even a peep comes out of them (the celebrities), that hurts,” she said.

Parvathy further explained that celebrities enjoy their position because audiences have supported their films and placed them on a pedestal. “They are in a state of power because the youth gave them that power. They put them on a pedestal. They watched their movies and made them a success. But suddenly, you are just quiet and nowhere to be seen. That feels like a very one-sided relationship, which I think is very unfair,” she said. The actor also pointed out that many young people struggle to complete their education or even meet basic needs, while still spending their limited money to watch films featuring their favourite stars. She questioned why celebrities would remain silent when such supporters face hardships.

The actor also argued that the old idea that actors should stay away from politics no longer holds weight. “We could have said that 10 years ago. But that ship has sailed,” she said. Parvathy added that she has personally experienced strong reactions to her opinions, but continues to speak because she feels it is necessary. “There are people who genuinely hate me for the kind of stuff that I say, but they still watch my movies, thinking, ‘She’s good in it, although I can’t stand her.’ I do it (react to people’s issues) because otherwise I can’t sleep at night,” she added. She also described silence from people in positions of privilege as a concern and said artists have an important role in giving people hope and amplifying issues that need attention.
