DUSU polls put student housing and safety in focus after Satya Niketan PG tragedy as ABVP files nominations and rivals make affordable accommodation a key plank.

NEW DELHI: The battle for Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) is taking shape around an issue that extends beyond the campus gates — where and how thousands of students live — as ABVP filed nominations of seven probable candidates on Thursday and intensified its outreach ahead of the polls.Alok Attri, Ishu Maurya, Lakshya Raj Singh, Nitin Tanwar, Riya Chhawari, Tanya Mavi and Yash Dabas filed nominations, with ABVP set to pick four of them for president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary after scrutiny.ABVP enters the election defending three of the four central posts it won last year — president, secretary and joint secretary — while NSUI holds the vice-president’s post. But the Satya Niketan PG building tragedy has brought student housing and safety sharply into the election discourse, with rival organisations competing over an issue affecting a large section of DU students dependent on private accommodation.

After filing nominations, ABVP’s probable candidates with the resolve of ‘No More Satya Niketan’.

ABVP, which has held protests over the incident, has begun a PG-to-PG survey under its “Aakhir Kab Tak?” campaign to identify fire, structural and basic-facility gaps.
