FSSAI proposes curbs on use of ‘paneer’ tag for analogue products
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed restricting the use of the term “paneer” for analogue paneer and cheese products to ensure consumers are not misled about their composition. The proposal covers food businesses, including hotels, restaurants and caterers, using dairy substitutes. Such products would need clear identification, with businesses required to prominently disclose the information on menu cards, packaging and other consumer touchpoints under existing labelling rules.
