‘Peaky Blinders’ star Joe Cole has pleaded guilty to a speeding offence after he was recorded driving 24mph in a 20mph zone in south London. The actor, who played John Shelby in the crime drama, was behind the wheel of a BMW 1 Series near Wandsworth Common when the offence took place.According to court documents cited by The Independent, Cole was driving 4mph over the speed limit. The incident happened on May 28, 2026. He later admitted the offence through the Single Justice Procedure, with a magistrate now expected to decide the penalty.

What happened to Joe Cole?

Reportedly, the incident involved a relatively minor breach of the speed limit, but it has brought the actor into the spotlight for a reason very different from his television work.Cole was recorded travelling 24mph in an area where the maximum permitted speed was 20mph. The location was near Wandsworth Common in south London, and the vehicle involved was a BMW 1 Series, according to court documents.Cole subsequently responded to the matter through the Single Justice Procedure, a process used to deal with certain criminal cases in England and Wales without requiring the defendant to attend a traditional court hearing.

Why did Joe Cole say he had not dealt with the matter earlier?

In his response, Cole explained that he had been away from the country. “I am an actor and have been abroad for the last few months,” he wrote, according to court documents cited in the reports. He also said that he had not received the paperwork relating to the offence. “I have not received relevant documentation for me to pay the fine for this offence,” Cole wrote. His explanation was included as part of his written response to the case. Cole also indicated that he did not want to attend court in person. Because of that, the case is set to be considered by a magistrate, who will decide what penalty should be imposed. The latest reports do not state a final penalty.

From John Shelby to other major roles

For many viewers, Cole remains closely associated with John Shelby, the younger brother of Cillian Murphy’s Thomas Shelby in ‘Peaky Blinders’.Cole was part of the drama from its early seasons and played John until the character’s storyline ended in 2017. His performance helped make him familiar to audiences around the world, particularly as the series grew into an international hit.The production material for the second and third series lists Cole among the show’s main cast as John Shelby. After leaving ‘Peaky Blinders’, Cole continued taking on roles across television and film rather than remaining tied to one character. He later appeared in the ‘Black Mirror’ episode ‘Hang the DJ’, a role that earned him a BAFTA nomination. He also became the lead of ‘Gangs of London’, where he played Sean Wallace, giving him another opportunity to take on a crime drama with a very different story and character.
