Eva Marie Saint was born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey. Working with the likes of Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, and Alfred Hitchcock, the actress was one of the most well-known and sought-after faces in the Hollywood industry at the time. She mainly grew up in Albany and Delmar, New York. As for her education, Saint studied acting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She graduated in 1946 and took up jobs in New York City as an NBC page, all the while studying at the American Theatre Wing and with Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio.Eva Marie won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her feature film debut as Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s 1954 classic On the Waterfront, starring opposite Marlon Brando. Alfred Hitchcock’s film launched her into stardom, which she was extremely grateful for. While talking to Vanity Fair in 2014 about working on the film, she revealed that Hitchcock even let her choose the clothes for her role. She added, “He didn’t talk about acting. He worked with me from the outside in. My hair, my makeup, my shoes, my jewellery, my purse, my gloves, everything. And just from creating that exterior for me, he gave me the sense of a spy lady. But we never talked about emotion. He told me not to use my hands; I have a habit of doing that, and to lower my voice. And always, in my scenes with Cary Grant, look directly into his eyes, which was not difficult.”After her big launch into the world of stardom, Eva appeared in a lot of films and TV shows over the course of her career. She went on to co-star in major productions like Otto Preminger’s ‘Exodus’ (1960) with Paul Newman, John Frankenheimer’s ‘Grand Prix’ (1966), and ‘The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming’ (1966). She also dabbled in TV and played recurring television roles, such as Cybill Shepherd’s mother in ‘Moonlighting’ in the 1980s, and she also won an Emmy Award for the miniseries ‘People Like Us’ (1990) and appeared as Martha Kent in ‘Superman Returns’ (2006)
