Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer 2’ is gearing up for its theatrical release on October 15, but a reported dispute over its digital release window could affect the film’s reach in North India. According to trade reports, the makers’ reported plan to premiere the Hindi version on an OTT platform four weeks after its theatrical debut clashes with the eight-week window expected by major national multiplex chains, including PVR INOX and Cinepolis. The disagreement could limit the film’s Hindi theatrical distribution if it remains unresolved.
Why ‘Jailer 2’ may miss major multiplex chains in North India
According to a trade report published by 123Telugu on October 12, the reported dispute centres on the gap between the film’s theatrical release and its digital premiere. The makers are said to have agreed to an OTT window of four weeks, while major national multiplex chains reportedly expect an eight-week gap for Hindi releases. This difference could prevent the Hindi-dubbed version from securing screenings at PVR INOX and Cinepolis. The report suggests that the film may consequently depend on single-screen theatres in North India rather than receiving a wider multiplex rollout. The Week also reported on October 12 that the disagreement could affect the Hindi version’s theatrical availability, while the original Tamil and other southern-language versions are expected to release as planned. The reported arrangement has raised questions about the trade-off between an early digital premiere and a wider theatrical release. While a shorter OTT window may be part of a valuable streaming deal, missing major multiplex chains could limit the film’s access to audiences in key Hindi-speaking markets.
Can ‘Jailer 2’ still chase the Rs 1,000 crore box-office milestone?
The reported distribution hurdle comes amid high expectations for the sequel, which reunites Rajinikanth with director Nelson Dilipkumar after the success of the first ‘Jailer’. The film has generated considerable anticipation, and its box-office prospects are being closely watched by fans and trade observers. However, a Rs 1,000 crore worldwide gross would be an ambitious target. A limited Hindi theatrical rollout could affect the film’s potential to draw audiences beyond its core southern markets, although its final performance will also depend on reviews, word of mouth, screen availability and audience turnout across other territories. The reported North India issue does not, by itself, determine the film’s overall box-office outcome. Its performance in Tamil Nadu and other southern markets, along with its overseas business, will also be important factors in determining its eventual worldwide total.
Rajinikanth reunites with Nelson for ‘Jailer 2’, Anirudh Ravichander returns
Backed by Sun Pictures, ‘Jailer 2’ reunites Rajinikanth with Nelson Dilipkumar, who directed the first instalment. Anirudh Ravichander returns as music composer, while the ensemble cast reportedly features appearances by Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar and Hrithik Roshan. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on October 15, 2026. A Telugu pre-release event is also part of the promotional campaign in Hyderabad, with Anirudh expected to perform live.
