Assembly polls: West Bengal turnout hits 93.2%, Tamil Nadu settles at 85.1%

KOLKAT/CHENNAI: Bengal recorded a historic 93.2% turnout in the first phase of assembly elections, while Tamil Nadu’s final provisional figure settled at 85.1% after a marginal revision, EC data showed on Saturday.More than 3.36 crore voters cast ballots across 16 Bengal districts on April 23, out of a 3.6 crore electorate. Cooch Behar led with 96.2%, followed by South Dinajpur at 95.4%. Malda (94.8%), Jalpaiguri (94.7%), Birbhum (94.5%) and North Dinajpur (94.2%) also crossed 94%. Only Kalimpong (83%) and Darjeeling (88.9%) remained below 90%.Tamil Nadu’s turnout was revised down by .05 percentage points, accounting for 28,672 voters and pegging total votes at 4.87 crore. Figures remain provisional. EC ruled out any re-poll after scrutiny of 75,064 polling stations. Karur district topped at 92.6%, while Karur constituency led with 93.4%. Veerapandi in Salem followed at 93.4%.
