Famed Korean idols IU and Byeon Woo Seok are currently leading the K-drama ‘Perfect Crown.’ While the show has been a hit for the most part, the latest episodes released recently ended up garnering a lot of public scrutiny. When many people pointed out some historical inaccuracies, thye actors were quick to issue an official apology on behalf of the show over the issues. Here is what we know so far about the matter.
IU and Byeon Woo Seok apologize over ‘Perfect Crown’ controversy
After fans and netizens alike called out the show and its team for making mistakes with some of the historical aspects of the show, the leading cast ended up apologizing over the matter.IU took to her social media to issue an official apology over the matter and whatever that had happened so far. In her apology note she wrote that “Over the past few days, I have carefully read each and every comment that many viewers left. As a lead actor of the drama, I feel I failed to show a responsible attitude and ended up causing great disappointment, and I am deeply sorry. Even now, my heart feels very heavy.”She further apologized about the historical discrepancies and further added that “I sincerely reflect and apologize—without excuse—for having gone into my acting without thinking more deeply about them. Because this was a drama in which it was important to convey imagination grounded in our own history and the traditional beauty of Korea, I should have read the script more carefully and studied more as an actor, but I did not, and I am ashamed of myself for that.”Byeon Woo Seok similarly took to his account to pen down a note regarding the recent issues that had arisen about the show. He also apologized to everyone who viewed the show and stated that “In the process of filming and acting in this drama, I did not think enough about what the historical context and meaning contained in it were and how that might be received by the viewers. Through the words of the viewers, I have been led to reflect and look back on myself, and as an actor I have once again deeply taken to heart that I need to approach my work with greater responsibility—considering not only the acting but also the message and context carried by the production. I sincerely apologize.”Both of the actors also thanked everyone who did their duty and properly informed them of all the issues that had arisen about the drama’s latest episode and all of the things that they had missed. The studio behind the K-drama also issued a similar apology, acknowledging all of the mistakes that they had made. They also apologized for the inconvenience caused because of the incident and vowed to ensure that nothing of this nature would happen ever again.
What historical inaccuracies did fans point out in ‘Perfect Crown’
As episode 11 aired online, many fans pointed out issues with the coronation ceremony that was depicted in the drama. The story line is focused on representing an alternative universe where the current democracy exists,w along with the royal palace and the royal family.One of the criticisms was that Korea was seemingly depicted as a lesser state than China, as per the comments of many netizens online. Many had also pointed out that during the coronation ceremony, the officials were shouting Cheonse instead of Manse. Manse symbolizes independence and was used for emperors only, while Cheonse was used mainly for lower officials or kings of tributary states.Another factor that angered a lot of people included the crown that the prince was seen wearing. Many shared that it had Chinese attributes, and was also not historically correct.
