NEW DELHI: Brazil’s journey to the FIFA World Cup 2026 began with a special farewell ceremony as the five-time champions departed for the tournament on Monday. The Brazilian squad received a traditional send-off at Galeao International Airport in Rio de Janeiro, where their team aircraft was “baptised” before take-off. The team travelled aboard a Boeing 767-300ER operated by Aeronexus and carrying the branding of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).As the aircraft prepared to depart, two airport fire engines created a spectacular arch of water over the runway, allowing the plane to taxi through the salute. The ceremony is a long-standing aviation tradition often reserved for special occasions. The water salute is viewed as a symbolic blessing for the aircraft and its passengers, with many believing it christens the journey and brings good fortune.Brazil will begin their Group C campaign against Morocco on June 14 before facing Haiti on June 20. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Scotland on June 25.Placed in a group featuring Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, Brazil are widely expected to progress to the knockout rounds but will be eager to make a strong start as they bid to reclaim football’s biggest prize. The most successful nation in World Cup history, Brazil have lifted the trophy five times — in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. They also hold the unique distinction of being the only team to have appeared in every edition of the FIFA World Cup.
