A fresh controversy has surfaced in the Tamil film industry after theatre owner and distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam made indirect remarks that many believe were aimed at RJ Balaji, the director of ‘Karuppu.’ The comments, made during a recent interaction with the media, quickly went viral on social media. Fans and industry followers began connecting his statements to the blockbuster film starring Suriya, which has been enjoying a successful run in theatres and on OTT.
‘Karuppu’ success becomes the background for the controversy
Speaking about the challenges faced by producers, Tiruppur Subramaniam said that audiences often do not realize the struggles that happen behind the scenes before a movie reaches theatres. Using ‘Karuppu’ as an example, he pointed out that the film was originally expected to be released much earlier but was delayed by several months. He said, “No big film gets completed and released exactly as planned. ‘Karuppu’ was supposed to release during Diwali, but it came out nearly eight months later. The problems producers face in the final days before release, and the stress they go through, are known only to them.”
Tiruppur Subramaniam’s indirect swipe at RJ Balaji draws attention online
The most talked-about part of his speech was his comment about directors after a film becomes successful. Without mentioning anyone by name, he remarked that some filmmakers behave differently once a movie turns into a hit. He said, “There are directors who sit inside their cars and cry out of tension before a film’s release. But after the movie becomes a success, they start saying, ‘I am the reason for this victory.’ Nobody talks about the hardships faced by producers before release.” The statement quickly went viral, with many social media users linking it to ‘Karuppu’ director RJ Balaji.
Tiruppur Subramaniam praises Suriya
During the same interaction, Tiruppur Subramaniam had special words of appreciation for Suriya. He claimed that when ‘Karuppu’ faced difficulties ahead of its release, the actor remained actively involved and showed genuine concern about resolving the issues. According to him, “When a film faces problems before release, actors and technicians usually don’t come forward to help. But only Suriya was genuinely concerned about the film ‘Karuppu’ when it was released, says the actor. His statements became a hot topic for cinephiles and movie critics. While some appreciated his observations about the difficulties of being a producer, others thought he unnecessarily criticized the movie’s director despite its success.
