Years ago, when Anne Hathaway’s ‘The Princess Diaries’ hit theatres, the audience could not get enough of the chick flick. Since then, another sequel was released, but plans for a third film never came to fruition. However, the project finally got the confirmation it needed earlier this year. Not only that, but according to the recent updates, a screenplay for ‘Princess Diaries 3’ is done, and the original book’s author is quite excited about it!
Meg Cabot talks about ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ screenplay
Meg Cabot, who penned the original novel series that inspired the 2001 film, recently revealed that she has seen the screenplay for the third film! While in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Cabot shared that the screenplay is ready and that she was extremely happy about the latest version.She said, “I read a script, and it was amazing. I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much. They don’t like it when you tell people what’s gonna happen yet. So I was like, ‘Better not send me any more scripts!’” She also shared that she wishes the production team would use the latest version of the screenplay, because this is one of the best iterations that she has seen for the new film. “Fingers crossed that’s the one they’re going to use, but it’s a really fun idea, and I’m one hundred per cent behind it,” she concluded.
About ‘The Princess Diaries 3’
The sequel has been in development for years, after the release of the 2004 sequel. However, in 2016, after director Garry Marshall’s passing, the project was halted. In 2022, it was picked up again and confirmed to be in development. Years later, in 2024, Anne Hathaway revealed that she would be reprising her role as Princess Mia in the film.In April, while in conversation with PEOPLE, the late Marshall’s daughter, Kathleen Marshall, teased more details about the upcoming project. She shared that “We’re moving it along. I mean, there’s just an incredible team in place. So it’s coming. It’s coming.” Kathleen also expressed excitement about being involved in anything related to ‘The Princess Diaries’ franchise and revealed that she and producer Debra Martin Chase often exchange emails about the film’s development.Hathaway also touched upon the topic while promoting her film ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ in April. While talking to Entertainment Weekly, she stated, “One hundred per cent, we’re constantly working on it.” She also talked about what fans would want from the film, sharing, “it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”
