Superman has been a staple of cinema for over four decades, with multiple actors taking on the iconic role across different eras and universes. Whether you are a lifelong fan or new to the character, navigating his film catalogue can be confusing. According to DC’s official guide, Superman films do not follow a universal continuity, which means the best way to watch them is in release order, grouped by the creative eras that define each actor’s portrayal of the character.
The Christopher Reeve era: ‘Superman’ (1978) to ‘Superman IV: The Quest for Peace’ (1987)
The journey begins with the 1978 film ‘Superman,’ directed by Richard Donner and based on a story by Mario Puzo. This was Superman’s first big-screen appearance, setting the standard for superhero movies to come. Christopher Reeve’s portrayal introduced audiences to Clark Kent’s origin story and his adoptive parents in Kansas. The film also features Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor and Marlon Brando as Superman’s biological father, Jor-El.

Following this is ‘Superman II’ (1980), which introduces General Zod, one of the franchise’s most well-known villains. In this film, Superman gives up his powers to be with Lois Lane, only to discover that a hydrogen bomb explosion has released Zod from the Phantom Zone. A director’s cut version known as the Richard Donner Cut was released in 2006 and is considered by many fans to be the definitive version.‘Superman III’ (1983) followed continuing Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the character. The final film in this era is ‘Superman IV: The Quest for Peace’ (1987) in which Superman attempts to rid the world of nuclear weapons. This film marks the end of the Christopher Reeve era though it is often considered the weakest entry in the series.
The Brandon Routh era: ‘Superman Returns’ (2006)
After a 19-year gap Superman returned to theatres with ‘Superman Returns’ in 2006. Brandon Routh took on the role of the Man of Steel in this film which acts as a loose continuation of the first two Reeve films while ignoring the later sequels. The main plot of the film focuses on Superman’s return to Earth after a long absence and his complicated relationship with Lois Lane.
The Henry Cavill Years: ‘Man of Steel’ (2013) to ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ (2021)
The 2013 film ‘Man of Steel’ was the turning point of a whole new Superman era on the big screen. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, presenting a fresh, darker and modern origin story. Unlike the optimistic tone of the Reeve films, ‘Man of Steel’ explores themes of isolation and the burden of power. The latest phase starts with ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016), which pits Superman against Batman over the government’s attempts to regulate his power. The film also introduces other DC heroes like Wonder Woman and sets up the events for the larger DC Extended Universe.

‘Justice League’ (2017) followed, bringing Superman together with other DC heroes to face an alien threat. This film was particularly troubled due to a change in directors midway through production from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon. In 2021, ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ was released on HBO Max, representing the director’s original vision for the film.
The James Gunn era: ‘Superman’ (2025) onwards
James Gunn has reinvented the DC Universe with a new ‘Superman’ film released in 2025, featuring David Corenswet in the title role. This marks the beginning of a new era for the character, with multiple villains including The Engineer and Ultraman.

How to watch: the recommended approach
Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Superman films do not require a specific viewing order due to continuity issues. It’s best to view all of them in release order, as this allows you to track the character’s growth through the different phases of filmmaking and see how technology and storytelling have evolved.‘Superman’ films are available to stream on HBO Max.
