“Pink and perfect,” that is how Robert described his Hollywood Hills house back in 1989 to Interview Magazine, when he was 23 years old. The actor used to keep a bright red piano in the front room, reported the article. Further, if we speak about the history of the house, Downey shared, “It was built by one of Cecil B. DeMille’s set designers for Charlie Chaplin, who lived here—or this was one of 90 places they built for him.”According to Realty Today, Downey owned a house in Hollywood Hills from 1989 to 1994. Sprawling over a 2,700-square-foot area, it was a two-story primary suite, a Spanish-style house with original beamed ceilings. It had three bedrooms and five bathrooms, and was loved for its French doors. Later, television personality Kelly Osbourne owned the house, reported the Los Angeles Times.

In 2009, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife and business partner, Susan, brought their home and office space together by purchasing a modern house in Venice, California, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The couple paid a handsome amount of $5.6 million for the 7,500-square-foot property. They used the top floor for residential purposes, while the 1,600-square-foot ground floor was optimised for commercial operations. Key features of this property include a nearly all-glass façade, a rooftop deck with an infinity pool, and a home theatre.
Malibu estate
The same year, the couple invested in another property and bought a Malibu compound for $13.4 million. The compound has a four-bedroom country-style cottage spanning over 3,500 square feet. But that is not the main highlight; the main spectacle is the seven-acre plot with pastures, animal enclosures, a tennis court, and a barn converted into a two-bedroom guesthouse.A couple of years after the purchase, in 2013, the actor added a 6,500-square-foot concrete clubhouse to the property. Architect Nicolo Bini was given the job, and he commissioned a thin-shelled building, which sits in one corner of the property alongside a kidney-shaped pool. In 2015, AD100 designer Joe Nahem, along with architect Ben Goodman, completed the dwelling with the needed furniture and decor. Speaking of the decor, it included cork flooring, round windows, a saltwater aquarium, and a breakfast nook tucked behind a retro screen.And it doesn’t end here. According to an interview with Purist, the house has wind turbines and solar-generated water systems to offset energy consumption. Now, for those wondering, what was the need for the clubhouse? Downey’s wife told The New York Times, “We wanted to try something that hadn’t been done before. Plus, we love a character.”

Robert Downey Jr added another property to his real estate portfolio in 2017, when he bought a 1970s beach house in Malibu for $3.8 million, the Los Angeles Times reported. With three bedrooms and three bathrooms, it is a 3,400-square-foot single-story. The beauty of this property is reflected by a great room with sliding glass doors leading out to a spacious deck with an ocean view. Other features include a detached garage with a studio, an outdoor kitchen, a swimming pool, a cabana, and a fire pit that round out the stone-paved backyard.
Hamptons windmill house
Yes, you read that right: the windmill house. We indeed kept the best for last. It was another 2017 purchase made by the Marvel star. He paid $10.5 million for the East Hampton windmill cottage. The home, built around 1885, was never an actual mill but rather a decorative replica that initially functioned as a playhouse. Over time, several additions transformed it into a full-sized residence. Inside the windmill, you’ll find a library and an office. The property boasts seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms spread across the main house, a guesthouse, and a studio. Additional highlights include a three-car garage, a potting shed, a 50-foot swimming pool, a tennis court, and beautifully landscaped gardens, all situated on four acres of land.
