The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday has given fans their first glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom aka, Doctor Doom. Besides the character’s look and powers raising eyebrows online, netizens have also taken note of his distinct new and ‘unrecognisable’ accent as he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the super villain.

Doctor Doom’s dialogue grabs attention

The trailer opens with Doctor Doom delivering a chilling warning, “Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision.” Many viewers noticed that Downey Jr. appears to have significantly altered both his tone and speaking style for this new role that will be nothing compared to his previous turn as Tony Stark.

Fans divided over RDJ’s new voice

The performance has prompted mixed reactions across social media. Some fans were immediately impressed by how different the actor sounds, while others weren’t convinced. One user wrote, “RDJ’s Dr. Doom voice sounds amazing. Wouldn’t even know it’s him under the mask.” Others echoed the sentiment, praising Downey Jr. for distancing the character from Iron Man.Not everyone, however, was convinced.Another fan commented, “RDJ’s Doom voice isn’t as bad as I’d thought it would be but he shouldn’t even be doing it in the first place.”However, there were others who remained unconvinced about the accent and recasting.

‘Tropic Thunder ‘clip goes viral

Adding fuel to the buzz around the actor’s new accent, fans have resurfaced a 2008 interview from the promotional tour of ‘Tropic Thunder’, claiming Downey Jr. experimented the accent nearly two decades ago. The clip, taken from the film’s popular Unscripted conversation featuring Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black, shows the star speaking in an exaggerated European-style accent that many believe now resembles his Doctor Doom voice.During the interview, Downey Jr. jokingly says, “Tony Stark, the most famous mass murderer,” prompting laughter from his co-stars. The video quickly spread across social media, with one fan humorously posting, “This must be what convinced Kevin Feige to cast RDJ as Doctor Doom.”

MCU fans eagerly await Doctor Doom’s debut

Despite the divided opinions about the trailer, CGI, VFX and other details, anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ remains sky-high. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the blockbuster is expected to unite heroes from across the MCU, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, the new Avengers, Black Panther, Shang-Chi, Ant-Man, while also bringing back Steve Rogers and Thor to bring the Multiverse Saga into its epic conclusion.‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theatres on December 18, where it will clash with ‘Dune: Part Three’ at the box office.
