Tabu moves Delhi High Court to protect personality rights, seeks action against AI-generated impersonation and identity misuse

Bollywood actress Tabu has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of her personality and publicity rights against the alleged unauthorised use of her name, image, likeness and other identity attributes, including AI-generated content and digital impersonation.As reported by IANS, the matter came up for hearing before Justice Jyoti Singh, who deferred the case after pointing out discrepancies in the documents filed on the actor’s behalf.

Delhi High Court asks Tabu to correct case filings

During the hearing, Justice Jyoti Singh observed that the memo of parties submitted by Tabu did not correctly mention the details of some of the defendants.The court asked senior advocate Swathi Sukumar, appearing for the actor, to file a fresh memo after rectifying the defects.Justice Singh noted that accurate particulars of all parties were essential for proper adjudication of the matter. Following the court’s directions, the hearing was deferred and the matter has now been listed for August 6.

Tabu raises concerns over AI-generated impersonation

According to the plea, Tabu has sought protection against the alleged unauthorised commercial exploitation of her identity in the digital space.The petition covers the unauthorised use of her name, image, likeness and other identity attributes, including misuse through artificial intelligence-generated content, digital impersonation and other forms of online exploitation.The case reflects growing concerns among celebrities over the misuse of their identities through deepfakes, fake endorsements and AI-generated content.

Tabu’s petition adds to a growing list of high-profile personality rights cases before the Delhi High Court.In recent months, several prominent public figures have either secured or sought legal protection against the unauthorised use of their identity, likeness or AI-generated imitations. They include former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Gavaskar, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, actors Arjun Kapoor, Allu Arjun, Nagarjuna, Varun Dhawan, Kajol, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Naga Chaitanya, singer Jubin Nautiyal, filmmaker Karan Johar, podcaster Raj Shamani and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
