Scottish indie rock band Trashcan Sinatras is mourning the loss of longtime guitarist John Douglas. The musician passed away at the age of 63 after a brief illness.His death was confirmed by the band through an emotional statement shared on social media.John Douglas died peacefully in the early hours of August 3, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones, as per the statement.
Band shares heartfelt statement
The band paid tribute to Douglas by sharing an emotional message signed by his fellow members.The statement read, “John Douglas 1963-2026. From Stephen, Davy, Paul and Frank. We are devastated to inform all of you that we have lost our dear friend and brother John after a brief illness. John died peacefully in the early hours of Monday the 3rd August 2026, surrounded by loved ones, his beautiful voice and songs filling the room.”

Trashcan Sinatras was formed in Irvine, Scotland, in 1986 and gradually became known for its melodic indie pop sound, layered harmonies and thoughtful songwriting.John Douglas joined the group shortly after its formation and remained an important part of the band’s journey.Over the years, he performed on all seven of the band’s studio albums and played a major role in shaping its musical identity.His guitar work and songwriting became closely associated with the band’s signature style. Beyond his work with Trashcan Sinatras, Douglas also collaborated with his wife, singer Eddi Reader, as part of her live band.He later explored a solo career and released his debut solo album in 2024.John Douglas’ death comes only days after Trashcan Sinatras released their latest album, Ever The Optimist.
