What is ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ about
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film follows a 95-year-old man who suffers a stroke while trying desperately to reach Pakistan. As he drifts in and out of memory, his grandson begins piecing together fragments of a pre-partition past, while the elderly man struggles to find peace in his final days. At its core, the film explores how the human cost of Partition continues to echo decades after the borders were drawn.
The film’s remarkable box office journey
‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ released in theatres in June to positive reviews but opened slowly at the box office. What followed, however, surprised many trade observers, as the film turned into one of the year’s most talked-about success stories through sustained word-of-mouth.According to the Sacnilk report, the worldwide collection of ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ is Rs 99.32 crore (India gross: Rs 77.34 crore; overseas: Rs 21.98 crore), while the India net collections stand at Rs 65.10 crore.Producer Mohit Choudhary confirmed the milestone in a statement to PTI, saying, “The box office success of Main Vaapas Aaunga is a reflection of the love the film has received from the audience. A very strong word of mouth powers it ahead as it marches towards a 50-plus-day theatrical run.”He further added, “In its sixth week, the film has already recovered its cost from the theatrical and non-theatrical revenue streams. This seemed extremely difficult at the start of its theatrical journey. While the film has been and will always remain a ‘people’s hit’, it is now officially also a commercial hit.”The film also marks the fifth collaboration between Imtiaz Ali and composer AR Rahman, following ‘Rockstar’, ‘Highway’, ‘Tamasha’ and ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’. ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ arrived in theatres on June 12, 2026.
