With ‘Batwara 1947’ just days away from release, Ameesha Patel has stepped in to correct speculation around her involvement in the film. The Aamir Khan-backed period drama stars Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the lead roles, alongside Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, and Ali Fazal in key supporting parts. However, comparisons between Preity’s on-screen look in the film and Ameesha’s iconic Sakina character from the ‘Gadar’ franchise had led to confusion online, with a viral post claiming the actress was set to reprise her role alongside Sunny Deol in the new film.

Ameesha Patel sets the record straight

Ameesha Patel was recently spotted in Mumbai, where a paparazzo video carried a caption suggesting she and Sunny Deol were “returning as Sakina and Tara” in Batwara 1947. The actress was quick to set the record straight, clarifying on social media that her association with the character Sakina is tied specifically to Sunny Deol’s Tara in the Gadar franchise, and not to his character in ‘Batwara 1947’. She noted that the film’s female lead is Preity Zinta, not herself, dismissing the mix-up in her characteristically candid style.

Ameesha Patel reacts to comparisons between Sakina from ‘Gadar’ and Preity Zinta’s character from ‘Batwara 1947’

The clarification comes after Ameesha had earlier responded graciously to fans drawing parallels between Preity Zinta’s look in the ‘Batwara 1947’ trailer and her own iconic portrayal of Sakina. When a fan suggested that Preity appeared to be channelling Sakina’s persona in the trailer, Ameesha responded warmly, wishing Preity well and referencing both characters with affection, while maintaining that the magic she and Sunny Deol created in ‘Gadar’ remains unmatched.

About ‘Batwara 1947’

Backed by Aamir Khan Productions and directed by filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, ‘Batwara 1947’ is a period drama set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition. The film follows Sikander Mirza, played by Sunny Deol, a Muslim man who relocates to Pakistan during Partition and is given a large haveli that once belonged to a Hindu family. Upon discovering that an elderly Hindu woman named Mai has remained in the haveli and refuses to leave, Sikander chooses to protect her from the rising communal tension and violence of the time rather than force her out. The film also stars Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare and Kanikka Kapur in significant roles. ‘Batwara 1947’ is scheduled to release in theatres on August 14, just ahead of Independence Day 2026.
