New Delhi: Govt is likely to send the FCRA bill to a joint committee of Parliament for scrutiny as part of its wider effort to evolve a consensus over the contentious legislation, which has drawn sharp protests from opposition parties and Christian bodies for its provisions that can allegedly stifle NGOs receiving foreign funding.The bill’s opponents, including church bodies which have met Union minister Amit Shah, have demanded it should be sent to either a parliamentary panel or be withdrawn. Some opposition parties, including Congress, have demanded that the bill be withdrawn.

Govt had reached out to opposition parties to elicit their views. An opposition MP said govt broached the demand of sending the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, which was introduced in Lok Sabha on March 25, to a joint committee at the business advisory committee, which includes members from different parties, of Rajya Sabha Tuesday.A parliamentary committee includes members from different parties and consults different stakeholders before arriving at its recommendations, a process that allows incorporation of various suggestions and likelihood of a consensus.
